Robyn (Jane) Cholerton
Before I enthuse about this afternoon's September classmates' birthday lunch, I'll say that we're already looking forward to October. For the record, I don't actually choose the restaurant where we'll meet, mostly respond with enthusiasm to someone else's suggestion. If someone born in the upcoming month has a favorite place to propose, that will probably take precedence, especially if that person is willing to check out the place for suitability, make inquiries of the staff, and make reservations. This afternoon, several spoke to me about considering places on the west side, and I encouraged them to put their heads together and come up with a place.
The criteria are that the place should be able to accommodate a group of our size (21 today, and a list of people who expressed regret at not being about to be with us), and should not close at 2/2:30 PM. It does take a while for all of us to be served, and we don't want to feel pressured to finish up and clear out.
The sight of that long, long table was a little daunting, but we did sort it out. Present were Walt Huebner, Neal Kloepfer, Susan Thompson, Betty Myers Schaefer and sister Susan Myers Puckett, Marcy McVay Cates, Mike Wartell and wife Ruth, Steve Brooks, Rhonda Beauchamp Blech, my friends Sandy Bryan and Toddy Tackett, Kathi Paton Murray and husband Tracy, Jerry Goffe, Lorraine Barth and Ricardo, Marty Glantz Farmer, Susie Strong Neuschwanger, Sandy Stewart Smallwood and me. My friend Sandy Bryan was pressed into service as designated celebrant, since no classmate had stepped up. We seem to mix it up quite effectively, people sitting with people they know, and others they don't, the chatty and the quiet interspersed. I appreciate that so many were willing to show up to sample an unfamiliar Afro-Caribbean cuisine, and in the end many enjoyed their selections, while others would choose something else, at another time. The conversation ranged all over the place, near as I could tell, and I'm glad to note that more of us are willing to get up and check in with others sitting farther away. We did miss Mary Ann, and John, and Barbara, and others who couldn't be there. Great company, and a delightful way to spend a couple of hours -- thanks to all!
So, October -- who, where, and when?
