September events at the Special Collections Library (old Main, Edith and Central NE) -- a couple of the "usual suspects" are making plans to be there this Saturday.  Anyone else interested?

Saturday, September 9 from 10:30 a.m. to 12:00 p.m., join us in Botts Hall for The Golden Age of Postcards in Albuquerque (Part 1): The Big Events. Nancy Tucker brings us this first installment of a series about Albuquerque's postcard publishers within our ongoing local history series, Making Change.

Saturday, September 16 from 10:00 a.m. to noon, welcome Dr. Joseph P. Sánchez, Dr. Angelica Sánchez-Clark and Stephen Mandrgoc as they celebrate their new book, Historic Route 66: A New Mexico Crossroads.

Saturday, September 30th, spend a day with us celebrating the wonders of maps! Our Map Festival will run from 11:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. and will include speakers, a scavenger hunt for kids, and a display of some wonders of cartography (including a few maps that make us wonder what the cartographer was thinking). More on this as September progresses, but save the date!

Rhonda Beauchamp (Blech)

I just received my UNM alumni magazine and saw Helen Dobell listed among the recently deceased. I found her obituary in the Missoula paper. She apparently died quite suddenly. Another sad day for those of us left behind.

Sad to hear of Helen DoBell's passing, Rhonda, but thanks for letting us know.  (I'm way behind on reading the UNM alumni magazine.)

On a somewhat related subject, I'm thinking about classmates in Florida and other parts of the Southeast US, as well as in the West Coast areas affected by fires.  I hope they'll check in to let us know how they're faring -- or that others in touch with them will let us know.

Very sad to hear about Helen.  I saw it in the Mirage, too.  Maybe she went quickly and didn't suffer.  Let's hope so.

We've finally settled on details for the September birthday lunch -- Monday, September 25, at the Jambo Cafe, 1105 Juan Tabo Blvd NE (between Constitution and Lomas).  1 PM, as usual.

The Jambo Cafe has been in Santa Fe for several years, but is new to Albuquerque.  Some of us have eaten there, and are enthusiastic about this chance for another of their delicious meals!  They feature east African cooking, which may be new to some of us, but we're assured that the staff will be glad to be informative.  Have a look at their webpage, at <http://jambocafeabq.com/>.

No one has yet spoken up to be the designated celebrant, and we certainly hope that someone will.  If not, we'll just figure it out.

Looking forward to seeing everyone!

Robyn

This Friday, the Highland Marching Band will make their first appearance at a Hornet football game -- vs. La Cueva HS, 7 PM at Milne Stadium.  (You may remember where Milne Stadium is located.)  If you missed seeing the band strut their stuff at March-a-thon, here's another chance!

Then, this Saturday, September 23, will be the season's last chance to support the band's last car wash, at Jim's Automotive, Washington and Lead SE.  Get your vehicle shiny and clean, in time for Monday's classmates' birthday lunch at the Jambo Cafe!

I think Yvonne is going. She doesn't read the website  :(  so she was unaware of the lunches.  She is enthused about joining us for lunch. Restaurant sounds interesting and if it is a success in Santa Fe, it should be good. Hope we get a good group of classmates again.

Thanks to everyone who's planning to get together for lunch!  Including those who have contacted me off the website, I think we've reached the capacity of the Jambo Cafe to handle our group.  See you at 1 PM!

Before I enthuse about this afternoon's September classmates' birthday lunch, I'll say that we're already looking forward to October.  For the record, I don't actually choose the restaurant where we'll meet, mostly respond with enthusiasm to someone else's suggestion.  If someone born in the upcoming month has a favorite place to propose, that will probably take precedence, especially if that person is willing to check out the place for suitability, make inquiries of the staff, and make reservations.  This afternoon, several spoke to me about considering places on the west side, and I encouraged them to put their heads together and come up with a place.

The criteria are that the place should be able to accommodate a group of our size (21 today, and a list of people who expressed regret at not being about to be with us), and should not close at 2/2:30 PM.  It does take a while for all of us to be served, and we don't want to feel pressured to finish up and clear out.

The sight of that long, long table was a little daunting, but we did sort it out.  Present were Walt Huebner, Neal Kloepfer, Susan Thompson, Betty Myers Schaefer and sister Susan Myers Puckett, Marcy McVay Cates, Mike Wartell and wife Ruth, Steve Brooks, Rhonda Beauchamp Blech, my friends Sandy Bryan and Toddy Tackett, Kathi Paton Murray and husband Tracy, Jerry Goffe, Lorraine Barth and Ricardo, Marty Glantz Farmer, Susie Strong Neuschwanger, Sandy Stewart Smallwood and me.  My friend Sandy Bryan was pressed into service as designated celebrant, since no classmate had stepped up.  We seem to mix it up quite effectively, people sitting with people they know, and others they don't, the chatty and the quiet interspersed.  I appreciate that so many were willing to show up to sample an unfamiliar Afro-Caribbean cuisine, and in the end many enjoyed their selections, while others would choose something else, at another time.  The conversation ranged all over the place, near as I could tell, and I'm glad to note that more of us are willing to get up and check in with others sitting farther away.   We did miss Mary Ann, and John, and Barbara, and others who couldn't be there.  Great company, and a delightful way to spend a couple of hours -- thanks to all!

So, October -- who, where, and when?

Robyn

Short notice, I know, but I hope that some of us can make it.  I believe this is in conjunction with an exhibition in the same room.
