SEE blog homepage above (LibertyAlumniDiscussions) for my complete bio (just below photo).

B.S. Mechanical Engineering - UNM - 1969.
M.S. Civil Engineering - University of Denver - 1974.
Self-employed engineering consultant since 1979.

I was a Dog Tracking Judge for the American Kennel Club for 26 years, ending in 2009. Kay and I had many champion Basset Hounds over the years.

I played banjo in two bluegrass bands in the 1970's and 80's.

Married Kay Long and her two children in 1971 in California. Kay died of cancer in 1998. Married Kaycee (Maggie) Donovan in 2000, adding two more stepchildren, Nikki and Renee.

Have lived in the majestic splendor of Colorado for the last four decades. I finally climbed one of Colorado's 53 peaks above 14,000 feet (Mount Bierstadt) with my stepdaughter Renee about 10 years ago. I did the Millenium ice dive in Lake Minnetonka, Minnesota on January 1, 2000. Renee and I did a January 1 ice dive at Boulder Reservoir in Colorado a couple of years later.

I began scuba diving in 1969 in the Air Force in Florida, then took it up again after coming back from Turkey in 1971, in Southern California. After one very cold Colorado mountain lake dive in the 80's, I gave up diving until I met and married Maggie. We took diving trips to the Fiji Islands and Cozumel, Mexico. One day when the weather was bad at Cozumel, we went over to Cancun on the mainland and took a bus south to the Dos Ojos (two eyes) freshwater caves for our first experience at cave diving. It was outstanding!

I started riding motorcycles in 2000 - bought my first motorcycle from Maggie, who had been riding many years. After we got married, we took our sportbikes to Daytona twice for Bike Week. In 2002, my son Alan and I rode our bikes to Sturgis, South Dakota for that weeklong bikefest.

Once I got interested in riding on the race track, I essentially gave up street riding, since the track is not only more exciting, but much safer than riding on roads with cars and idiots.

Since I began writing my blog two years ago, I have posted many articles concerning my interests, hobbies and personal philosophy. Here is a link to my article about meeting and debating astronaut Jack Swigert (Apollo 13) several times in 1982 when I ran for Congress:

The articles I wrote for the Independence Institute over the last two decades - mostly about Colorado water rights - can be found here:

I also post articles written by others on occasion, including Dr. Ron Paul:

I was blessed to be part of the HHS Class of 1963, and look forward to seeing you all again.

6/16/2013 UPDATE: I have just added a link to an impressive Wikipedia article about 365-foot Bridal Veil Falls and its hydro plant near Telluride, Colorado in the photo caption below.

Jim, I am late responding to some of your thoughts. On my 70th birthday (Sept 17), you quoted some of Andy Rooney's signoff thoughts. One in particular grabbed me, as it has been one of the best things I ever learned: "When you plan to get even with someone, you are only letting that person continue to hurt you." This reminds me of the Roman slave Epictetus, who, despite being beaten and crippled for life, was one of the first Stoic Philosophers in ancient Greece. The essence of his philosophy was, "worry only about those things over which you have control." This simple message has often reduced the stress in my life, as Epictetus has remained one of my favorite - and most useful - mentors.

I remember Robert as one of my first acquaintences after we moved to Albuquerque in1954. I went to Emerson Jr. High in 4th grade, then North to Monte Vista for 6th Grade, Then to Jefferson Jr. High. I think Bob went to Wilson Jr. High, so I didn't see him for a couple of years. He was always a pleasant guy, and I remember him fondly.

Rest in peace, Robert...

This is at a 2009 trackday at Pueblo, Colorado. This is my little 400cc "Bumbleebee," which corners like it's on rails, but is not as powerful as my road bikes.

Maggie (redhead) and me (old fart with hat) at our first Burning Man festival in Nevada's Black Rock desert in 2003. A younger father and his daughter from Boulder CO rode with us in our motorhome.

Beautiful wings made out of cards at Burning Man. Since the non-economy of Burning Man includes voluntary "gifting," the young lady was nice enough to give me a wonderful tote bag she had made, just when I was all out of glow sticks to give her. The idea is not to expect something in return, but to just give.

Me and Maggie in Minneapolis on New Year's Eve the night before the new millenium. Next day, I did the Millenium ice dive in Lake Minnetonka - January 1, 2000.

Eric Jacobsen's 1890's hydro plant and home at the top of 365-foot Bridle Veil Falls near Telluride, Colorado. I had a meeting with Eric at his house for my Telluride client, over a water dispute. The Telluride area is the most magnificent place I have ever seen, with the possible exception of the Grand Canyon. Walking down the natural entrance to Carlsbad Caverns alone in January also ranks high on my list. SEE http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bridal_Veil_Falls_(Telluride)

Me at Fisherman's Wharf at San Francisco, our favorite destination on the California Zephyr. SF is our favorite train ride, crossing not only the Rockies, but also the Sierra Nevadas, before descending into Sacremento, then Oakland. Going over Donner Pass at night in deep snow on the train is one of the two most romantic places Maggie and I ever experienced. The other was a full moon over Lake Superior in the middle of winter, north of Duluth, Minnesota.
