Air Force in 1965 and, upon his discharge, served New Mexico in a brief stint with the U. S. Coast Guard. He left the USCG and rejoined the USAF, where he worked at Kirtland Air Force Base, in the supply unit, for the Air National Guard's 150th Fighter Wing. He retired as a USAF master sergeant, having served his country with quiet pride for 34 years.

Steve was an avid sportsman, too. He payed football in school, and he was an all-state champion wrestler for his Highland Hornets.
