Thanks to Rick Gutzmann for letting us know about the passing of a great friend and our classmate John (we all knew him by his middle name, Larry) Cannon. He was a very special warm, friendly, and outgoing guy whose personality always entertained us with unexpected surprises. I have so many excellent memories flashing back of times and adventures we shared. He greatly enriched my Highland years and beyond. I last saw him when he and his wife were on vacation and stayed with me and my wife at our San Diego home. Together we all had a fantastic day attending all the whale, seal, and dolphin shows at Sea World.
As with so many of our Highland classmates, Larry was enterprising and accomplished much during his lifetime. Starting out, he began a business with his wife, The Sassy Pup, a combination dog grooming and antique store. Later he was best known for his fascination and love of Hatch green chilis. In 1977 on his own home’s kitchen stove he formulated a product, Cannon’s Sweet Hots, that combined the excellent taste of those green chilis with the savory flavor of sweet dill. It was a unique, one of a kind product, that spurred the development of his new company. That product and others soon appeared on grocery shelves and was an award winner at a national food show. Larry’s business was successful for over twenty years at which time it was sold. Cannon’s Sweet Hots are still available.
Larry will be greatly missed by all who knew him.
