I'm really looking forward to the raptor excursion -- now less than a week away!   Who else will be going?  I've accepted a ride in a car pool, and it would probably be a good idea to see who could catch a ride with whom.  Please post here, or give Jerry Goffe a call at 385-3333.  (You could even call me, although Jerry has more answers than I do.)

Quick update:  I got a call from Jerry Goffee this afternoon, postponing Sunday's raptor trip, due to the incoming storm.  Apparently the birds would not be happy about the weather, and we do want the birds to be happy.  So, if you were thinking of showing up spontaneously -- don't!

We are looking for another date, between now and the end of February, to be as inclusive as possible.  Stay tuned!

Okay!  The gentlemen have conferred, and decided upon next Sunday, the 28th, other information the same.  If you're available, please check in, here or by phone with Jerry.  (Or, even, if you're not available, as you like.)  The information is repeated below, adjusted for the new date.

Mark your calendar for SUNDAY, JAN.. 28, 2018 if you’d like to join a small group for a field trip to see and experience raptors such as Harris’s Hawks and Aplomado Falcons. We will leave from the north end of the K-Mart parking lot at Carlisle and I-40 at 7:00 AM sharp. We will travel to San Antonio (New Mexico), have breakfast and meet with Matt Mitchell, a HHS graduate. We’ll then drive out about 12 miles east and have a few hours of fun, excitement, learning and photography. Total travel round trip distance will be about 200 miles and we should be home early afternoon. Please be sure to dress appropriately and bring a hat and a camera. Matt is doing this for us as a favor, so please bring gratuity … his birds will be very appreciative. Any questions should be directed to me, Jerry Goffe, at 385-3333.

At last!  It's ime to celebrate the January birthdays!  We'll meet at 1 PM on Monday, January 29, at Los Cuates, 4901 Lomas Blvd NE.  Classmates willing to be celebrated are Neal Kloepfer, Susie Strong Neuschwanger, and me, and we all hope to be entertained and entertaining, and suitably feted!  (I'm looking forward to hearing about the previous day's raptor cxcursion, and seeing pictures.)

Please let us know you'll be coming, preferably by Friday -- whether you're a "usual suspect", occasional dropper-iner, or haven't been to one of these lunches before.  Looking forward to seeing you!

Robyn

I was sorry to hear of the passing of Sue Westfall.  We were good friends at Highland, eating lunch together most school days.  Choosing different paths at UNM, we drifted apart.  Sounds like she she has a loving family with several grandchildren.  A very sweet and kind lady.

Marcia "Marcy" McVay (Cates)

As some of you know, my brother, Grady McVay, has been hospitalized for the past month, and previously 2 weeks in December. Very unexpected, a reaction to immunotherapy for cancer. I will be at the luncheon if nothing unexpected occurs.

One picture may not tell the whole story, but it can open the conversation!

Picture us fueled by a delicious breakfast, under a fabulous New Mexico sunlit sky, accompanied by one birdmaster, one Aplomado falcon, two Harris's hawks (all magnificent athletes and full of personality), and a flock of Meetup photographers.

l - r (humans), Hank Nusbaum (LCHS '63), Matt Mitchell (HHS, um, '75?), Anna Nusbaum, Robyn, hawk-crowned Marty Glantz Farmer, Helen Stambaugh Williams.  Jerry Goffe behind the camera.

Thanks to Jerry for making this happen!

I'm looking forward already to another such excursion next year -- and also to lunch on Monday!

Robyn

Just saw Robert Osborne's obituary. I had him for world history. Do I remember correctly that for one of his assignments we were to see La Dolce Vita? My parents wouldn't allow it.

Our January birthday lunch was leisurely, but that's not actually related to why it's taken me so long to post a note about it.  Life is complicated, which surely surprises no one.

Sitting around the table at Los Cuates on Lomas were Helen Stambaugh Williams, Steve Brooks, Neal Kloepfer, Susie Strong Neuschwanger, Marty Glantz Farmer, George Boyden, Jerry Goffe, Karla Irwin Cates, Toddy Tackett, Hank Nusbaum, Sandy Bryan, Marcy McVay Cates, Walt Huebner, Sandy Stewart Smallwood, Mary Ann Simanek Villarreal and me.

News and gossip shared around the table are not my stories to pass along here, but conversation was lively, and Hank brought pictures he had taken on Sunday's bird trip.

We're already beginning to look forward to the February birthday lunch, to be scheduled for one of the later-in-the-month Mondays, honoring Karla Irwin Cates and Betty Myers Schaefer and others who may step up.  Looking forward!

Robyn

Rhonda:

Any chance you could post a copy of Bob Osborne's obituary? He was among the best of the many fine teachers we shared.

Unfortunately I am not tech savvy enough for that but I believe you can just google Robert Osborne obit in Albuquerque and legacy will bring it up. Someone else probably knows how to post it here. Anybody?

Robert Osborne

Robert Francis Osborne, age 86, passed away on January 28, 2018 surrounded by family at home in Albuquerque. He was born to Robert and Wallie Osborne in Seaford, NY. He was married to Barbara Rahe Osborne, the great love of his life, for 47 years. At 17, he enlisted in the Air Force. He was sent to UNM to become a weather forecaster. He served seven years in the United States and Europe as a squadron forecaster. He returned to UNM in order to get a BA and MA in history. Teaching world history was one of the pleasures of his life. Bob taught four years at Highland High School and 22 years at Sandia High School. With 14 teachers, he helped form the first teachers' union in the state of New Mexico. With Barbara and Bob's shared interest in the humanities, they explored Europe from Spain to Russia. Their large extended family of four generations gave them much pleasure.

Robert was preceded in death by his wife, Barbara; son, Cole Osborne; and granddaughter, Carla Crutchfield. He is survived by his children, Robert Osborne, Kathy Kittle, Donna Crutchfield, and Toby Osborne; grandchildren, Katrina Mares, Jason Osborne, Allan Kittle, Shaun Osborne, Candice Costley, and Brandon Osborne; and great-grandchildren, Brianna Alva, Ayla Osborne, Emma Costley, Tyler Costley, Jade Osborne and Glenn Mares.

Funeral services will be held Sunday, February 4, 2018, 12:30 p.m., at FRENCH â€" Wyoming. Friends and family may visit beginning at 11:00 a.m. Graveside services will take place Monday, February 5, 2018, 11:15 a.m., at Santa Fe National Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Albuquerque Museum of Art and History, P.O. Box 7006, Albuquerque, 87194 or Albuquerque Botanical Gardens, 903 10th St. SW, Albuquerque, 87105, or a charity of your choice. Please visit our online guestbook for Robert at

Ta-DAH!  Karla Irwin Cates and Betty Myers Schaefer have set the February lunch (to celebrate their birthdays, and perhaps others?) for Monday, February 26, at 1 PM.  The place will be  BJ Brewhouse.  They list their address as 2100 Louisiana Blvd. NE Building 213 and say "We are located 1 block north of I-40, right off Louisiana Blvd. We sit in front of Winrock Shopping Center, right next to Macaroni Grill."  This restaurant is unfamiliar to me, but their online menu has a lot of different choices.

And, for those who like to plan long-range, Steve Brooks has consulted two other March birthday folks, and has set March 26 for the March birthday lunch -- details to follow.
