Robyn (Jane) Cholerton
With apologies for such a delay, here's the report on the January 7 birthday celebration lunch, at El Bruno on N. 4th. I counted 26 noses around the table -- Bonnie Kruger Kelly, Lyn Brosman Romero, Mike and RuthWartell, Tooey Boyden (HHS '62), Neal Kloepfer, Jerry Goffe, Connie Pecha Welty (HHS, um '60?), John Criswell, Mary Ann Simanek Villarreal, Susan Thompson, Helen Stambaugh Williams, Susie Strong Neuschwanger, Betty Myers Schaefer, Susan Myers Puckett (HHS '59), Carol Glavey Fort and husband Curtis Fort, Yvonne Maher, Marty Glantz Farmer, Jewel! Glavey (HHS, um, '62?), George Boyden, Marcy McVay Cates, Sandy Bryan, Steve Brooks, Andy Paquet, and me.
As usual, meals seemed to be enjoyed around the table, with special appreciation of their lunch menu -- smaller portions and cost. A new note: the Forts had had a late breakfast, but ordered a couple of appetizers to share with anyone within reach (lucky me, I was sitting next to Carol). I can now report that El Bruno prepares their guacamole right at tableside -- a touch of freshness that I appreciate and enjoy -- and it's a large portion, involving two avocados. The restaurant describes its taquitos as "famous", but it took us right back to cruising Mac's, with chuckles.
There were so many at lunch that I barely had a chance to smile and nod at each person and was able only to chat with those sitting adjacent to me. Delightful though that was, I know that I missed a lot. Jerry Goffe did announce to us all that he would be glad to lead another excursion for a group wanting to spend some outdoor "at liberty" time with his friend Matt's raptors. He encourages anyone interested to contact him to make arrangements. Having made two of these trips, I can verify that it's a fun way to spend a little more than half a day, as well as informative. The birds have their own scheduling considerations, though, so don't wait to talk with Jerry about a trip.
There was some conversation at my own end pf the table about a group train trip to Winslow AZ, with an overnight stay at La Posada, restored Harvey House. Rhonda Beauchamp Blech and husband Frosty have spoken about what a superb destination this is, so let's talk about it! As a run-up to such a trip, there was talk of a daytrip to Las Vegas NM to have a look at the Castaneda (and other local delights), or even a trip to the Belen Harvery House Museum.
Closer to home, if you're having trouble accessing this website via your phone, next time you may wish to sit next to Mary Ann Simanek Villarreal, as Susan Thompson did. I'm glad to know this!
On to February! I've received some input already -- yay! -- but would like to hear more from the February birthday folk.
