Martha Glantz (Farmer)
HHS JULY LUNCH REPORT. Last Monday, twelve of us met at Bataan Park for early lunch. The air was perfect—temperate with a slight breeze, in weather lingo. We missed the 10 travellers from last month’s group, but conversation was lively across the circle as well as with those next to us.
Sandy Stewart Smallwood, Neal Kloepfer, Helen Stambaugh Williams, Ruthie Wartell joined by Mike after his meeting, John Criswell, Jerry Goffe, Susan Thompson, Jim Bell, and George and Tooey Boyden filled out the circle.
Jerry won the honorable mention of a unique vehicle this month by arriving in his motorized wheelchair, undaunted by distance or traffic! Ruthie shared candied orange peel from their recent trip to Croatia, and Tooey brought peaches from her tree. Marty brought M&M’s in packages—not a single drop of chocolate on fingers …or shoes! Each person had a favorite flavor, an element of surprise to me. Most preferred Carmel, Peanut, and Peanut Butter over the stalwart plain chocolate. The chocolate was indeed SOFT, but a yummy contrast to the crisp candy shell. We will no doubt continue this trend until fudge season.
Next month, Mon. August 9, we may meet on the west side at 11AM. It’s time to widen our borders from our old haunts, (although conversation did include who lived where and memories of our friends of yesteryear. <smile>) I will be checking into shady parks with ramps and nearby bathrooms. If you have an idea, let me know.
PS. M&M’s trivia from Wikipedia: in the 1930’s Forrest Mars, the son of Mars candy magnate, noticed Spanish civil war soldiers eating pill-sized chocolate candiis. Then a similar candy was made in Britain. Both were forerunners of M&M’s. Forrest bought the patent. He then teamed up with Bruce Murrie, son of the president of Hershey’s candy. Mars had the patent, Murrie had the chocolate. Mars and Murrie Candy Co. ... M&M’s was born in 1941. They became part of US soldiers MREs--Meals Ready to Eat. (Was M&M the first acronym of our young lives? It’s sweeter than most. Groan.)
