Sorry about your foot, Gloria.  Was that your birthday present "to yourself"?   Not fun.  I know from experience.  Hope your birthday was a good one and hope both you and I will be at the next picnic/lunch

June Picnic Lunch highlights:

Steve Brooks and Gail Stark staked out our site early, followed by Ron and Pamela Richardson Williams, Sandy Stewart Smallwood, Mike and Ruthie Wartell, Frosty and Rhonda Beauchamp Blech, Hank and Bonnie Kruger Kelly.

Pamela Richardson Williams and Ron won the beat-the-heat contest with their electric fans attached to spray bottles.

In an effort to maintain Robyn’s tradition of chili fudge while still pleasing the governor, I brought wrapped Lindor chocolates.  John Criswell, with his inimitable calmness, asked me if this was how we were to eat them, as the liquified chocolate dripped out of the wrapper through his fingers onto his shoe.  Ah, I envisioned the birth of M&M’s.  Actually, I wished for them.

Others not mentioned in previous posts were Susie Strong Neuschwanger (whose name tag read Forgot🙃), Susan Thompson and ‘62 alum Jim Bell, Craig and Reyna Meyers, In all we had 25!  And that’s without the 4 who had to cancel due to mishaps and heat stroke avoidance.

The park gave us opportunity to visit more easily than in a restaurant setting.  And, as George and Tooey Boyden will attest, coming late was not awkward. You can just blend in without obligations to waiters and seating arrangements.  I say that to encourage others to come even for a short time as time and stamina permit.  Mary Ann, I wish you could join us. Gloria and Betty, too. Next month Adele Parker Verkamp and Karen White will be in town, so save the second Monday in August for lunch with them!

11:00am, Bataan Park at Lomas and Carlisle. Monday, June 12. That’s TODAY!  BYO food and chair.

HHS JULY LUNCH REPORT.  Last Monday, twelve of us met at Bataan Park for early lunch. The air was perfect—temperate with a slight breeze, in weather lingo. We missed the 10 travellers from last month’s group, but conversation was lively across the circle as well as with those next to us.

Sandy Stewart Smallwood, Neal Kloepfer, Helen Stambaugh Williams, Ruthie Wartell joined by Mike after his meeting, John Criswell, Jerry Goffe, Susan Thompson, Jim Bell, and George and Tooey Boyden filled out the circle.

Jerry won the honorable mention of a unique vehicle this month by arriving in his motorized wheelchair, undaunted by distance or traffic! Ruthie shared candied orange peel from their recent trip to Croatia, and Tooey brought peaches from her tree.  Marty brought M&M’s in packages—not a single drop of chocolate on fingers …or shoes!  Each person had a favorite flavor, an element of surprise to me.  Most preferred Carmel, Peanut, and Peanut Butter over the stalwart plain chocolate. The chocolate was indeed SOFT, but a yummy contrast to the crisp candy shell.  We will no doubt continue this trend until fudge season.

Next month, Mon. August 9, we may meet on the west side at 11AM.  It’s time to widen our borders from our old haunts, (although conversation did include who lived where and memories of our friends of yesteryear.  <smile>)  I will be checking into shady parks with ramps and nearby bathrooms. If you have an idea, let me know.

PS. M&M’s trivia from Wikipedia: in the 1930’s Forrest Mars, the son of Mars candy magnate, noticed Spanish civil war soldiers eating pill-sized chocolate candiis. Then a similar candy was made in Britain. Both were forerunners of M&M’s. Forrest bought the patent.  He then teamed up with Bruce Murrie, son of the president of Hershey’s candy. Mars had the patent, Murrie had the chocolate.  Mars and Murrie Candy Co. ... M&M’s was born in 1941.  They became part of US soldiers MREs--Meals Ready to Eat.  (Was M&M the first acronym of our young lives?  It’s sweeter than most. Groan.)

Thank you, Martha for doing the scouting for locations.  Outside seems to be the way to go for a while more,

at least.  It is good to see people again.  Thank you!!!

Martha,

At the picnic you wondered how M&Ms were made. Thanks for the history of M&Ms. From the food net work, this is how they are made.

Reading about Jerry and his wheelchair reminded me, back in the day, I would be driving home between Carlisle and Girard on Lomas and once in awhile would run up on some old guy booking it down Lomas in his three wheel golf cart.  That front wheel planted on the white strips down the center of the road; the two rear wheels taking up space in the two travel lanes.  Headed, no doubt to the UNM North Golf Course.  Never saw a license plate and never saw him talking to a cop.Better yet, never saw a crashed golf cart in the road, which is more than I can say for some golf courses I've been on!

John, I watched this video and debated about putting it on my already lengthy letter.  It is well worth the 4 minutes!  So glad you posted it!!

It is fun to hear from a distance about all your gatherings.

I have to share a something from my husband's invitation to his 60th high school reunion.  It suggested in all seriousness that we notify our caregivers in advance so they can schedule.  We had a good humorous exchange.  Most fortunately at this point we don't have caregivers and are doing very well both physically and mentally.  We recently spent three years helping in a rest home and know how grateful we should be and are.

Please enjoy each year/month/week/day/hour you have left.

I have so many memories of those amazing years.

Just a brief note in memory...Terry Stone, '64, passed away in early July after a long bout with kidney disease. You might remember him from our football team.

I will be posting tomorrow about our lunch site for Monday, August 8, at 11:00.  Remember we will have 2 Arizonans attending, eagerly anticipating familiar faces!

HHS LUNCH AUGUST 9, MONDAY, 11AM  We are going to meet on the West side this month at Mariposa Basin  Park, 4900 Kachina St.NW, 87120.  It sounds quite delightful with 3 walking trail loops around ponds, a draw for birdwatchers, plus playgrounds and sports fields. I understand that ramps and bathrooms are available too!

We are going to stake our a spot on the "road less travelled", and Sandy Stewart Smallwood or I will direct you from the parking lot.  BYO chair and food.  I will bring M&M's and my 20th Reunion book if anyone wants to stroll down memory lane.  It would help if you RSVP here so we can find a space that fits our needs. Let's have a big gathering while we can!!
